Laughter Yoga began in 1995 in Mumbai, India. It was started by a medical Doctor called Matan Kataria. He started one morning on the beach with 5 people and now it has spread to over 10,000 groups in 65 countries. Laughter Yoga works on the premise that anyone can laugh for no reason, you don’t need jokes, comedy or a sense of humour. A Laughter Yoga class is made up of four parts, clapping and movement, yogic breathing, laughter exercises and a final relaxation. These elements combine Yogic breathing (Pranayama), gentle movement and laughter exercises which oxygenate the body and brain and make you feel happy, energised and relaxed. It’s a fact that the human brain does not know the difference between fake laughter and the real thing. It reacts to all laughter by releasing a mix of natural feel good chemicals and hormones into the body, these all have a positive effect and result in laughter being a natural stress buster.
